Virtual Estimator
An estimation portal for roofing, walling and building trades

The project
Virtual Estimator is an Australian estimating product for roofing, walling, flooring, landscaping and concrete trades. It has two sides: desktop software for teams that estimate in-house, and a service where the Virtual Estimator team does the take-off for them.
We built the web portal behind the service. Customers order an estimate and upload their plans, and the Virtual Estimator team runs every job from order to finished report in one place.
The challenge
Service jobs arrive as plans and drawings that have to be priced, assigned to a modeller, checked and paid for. Customers are in several countries, ask for different turnaround times and need different reports, from one combined PDF to split-level reports for multi-storey homes.
Tracking that in email and spreadsheets made it hard to see what was waiting, who had it and what was still unpaid.
The solution
We built an estimation portal and admin dashboard. Customers create a project, choose the project type, urgency and report type, and upload plans of up to 50 MB per file. Each order lands on a jobs board with live counts for pending, in-progress, completed, payment-pending and unpaid work.
Staff move each project through a set workflow: pending, ready for modelling, ready for QA, being QA’d and completed. Projects are assigned to a modeller and every status change is recorded.
Prices are set per project type and per currency, so a UK roof has a fixed price in pounds rather than a converted one. Payments run through Stripe, with weekly invoices for regular customers and a list of unpaid invoices. The admin also manages users, groups and permissions, API keys, report types, software downloads and the web store.
What it does
- Jobs board with live counts by status and payment
- Customer project form with plan uploads up to 50 MB per file
- Project types for roofs, walls, block layouts and commercial buildings
- Three turnaround options: 12, 24 and 48 hours
- Modeller assignment and a QA stage before completion
- Status history for every project
- Fixed pricing per project type in six currencies
- Report types from combined PDF to split-level reports
- Stripe card payments, weekly invoices and unpaid invoice list
- Users, groups, permissions and API keys
- Software downloads and web store management
How we built it
- Discovery: How service jobs move from order to finished report, and where they got stuck.
- Design: A jobs board and project workflow in Virtual Estimator’s teal and copper brand.
- Build: Blazor WebAssembly portal on .NET, with Stripe payments, invoicing and permissions.
- Test: Each workflow run end to end on a staging site with the Virtual Estimator team.
The results
- 6 Currencies with fixed pricing
- 3 Turnaround options
- 5 Workflow stages
