The project

We built a camera-based safety monitoring system for construction sites, combining hard-hat and hi-vis detection with alerts when people enter forklift buffer zones. Supervisors can review each event with its camera, timestamp, snapshot and duration, then record how it was handled.

The platform brings together area-specific PPE rules, shift checks and weekly reporting. It gives site teams a consistent way to spot potential issues between inspections and identify locations that need attention.

The challenge

Site safety checks happen at the gate and during walk-rounds, while work continues across multiple areas throughout the shift. A missing hard hat, missing hi-vis clothing or a pedestrian entering a vehicle area can go unnoticed between those checks.

Supervisors also need more than a stream of alerts. They need to know where an event happened, what the camera saw and whether the issue was resolved, with a record they can review for recurring patterns.

The solution

We built a computer vision system that detects people, hard hats, hi-vis clothing and forklifts in the site camera feeds. PPE requirements are configured by area, so checks reflect the rules for the part of the site in view.

Forklift detection adds a configurable buffer zone around the vehicle. When a person enters that zone, the system raises an alert for review. Each event includes a snapshot, camera, timestamp and duration, giving the supervisor the context needed to assess it. Events can be resolved or marked as false alarms rather than left as an unmanaged notification list.

A start-of-shift view supports checks on the crew’s equipment, while weekly reporting groups compliance events by day and camera. This gives site managers a way to identify repeated issues and direct follow-up work. The system supports the site’s existing supervision and inspection routines; alerts remain subject to human review.

What it does

  • Person, hard hat and hi-vis detection
  • PPE rules set per area
  • Forklift detection with a buffer zone
  • Instant alert for pedestrians in a forklift zone
  • Snapshot, camera and duration on every alert
  • Resolve or mark as false alarm
  • Start-of-shift crew check
  • Weekly compliance report by day and camera
  • Runs on the site’s existing cameras

How we built it

  • Define site rules: Mapped camera views to working areas and set the hard-hat, hi-vis and vehicle-buffer rules for each.
  • Build detection: Developed detection for people, hard hats, hi-vis clothing and forklifts, checking the results across site and warehouse footage.
  • Build incident review: Created alerts with snapshots, timestamps and durations, plus actions to resolve events or mark false alarms.
  • Add shift and weekly views: Brought crew checks and reporting into the same workflow so supervisors can act on events and managers can review recurring patterns.

The results

  • 2 PPE checks
  • 0 New cameras needed
  • Set per zone Forklift buffer
